Today I went to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library with my Mom. Both my Mom and I are fans of President Reagan, and I knew my Mom would enjoy spending the afternoon seeing some of the historical items about her favorite President.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential library isn’t a library in the usual sense. It is more like a museum, preserving the written record and physical history of our 40th President. It preserves the documents and artifacts of President Reagan, and provides insight into the time in which he lead our nation.

There were three specific highlights for me. One is they actually have the original Boeing Air Force One plane that President Reagan used to travel more than 631,000 miles around the world while he was President. In his first four years President Reagan made more than 120 official trips, visiting more than 200 cities at home and abroad. You actually can walk on Air Force One and see how it looked like while he was President.

The second highlight was an exact replica of the Oval Office while Reagan was President. It is much bigger than I would have originally thought.

The final highlight is that it is the final resting place of our 40th President. The Memorial Site inscription reads:
I know in my heart that man is good, that what is right will always eventually triumph and there is purpose and worth to each and every life.
Ronald Reagan
It was a wonderful day, and we both had a great time. If you ever get a chance to go visit the Presidential library I would highly recommend it.
Movie Review: Gran Torino February 16, 2009

Monica and I watched the new Clint Eastwood movie “Gran Torino“ last night, and I wanted to let everyone know what we both thought of it.
Now I have always been a fan of Clint Eastwood. I think he is one of the greatest American actors ever, and recently has also become quite a wonderful director as well. I love him in those old westerns where he plays the cowboy who comes to save the innocent from the bad guys, and this movie isn’t that too far off from that concept that he seams to be able to portray so well. If you have never seen “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” I would highly recommend it. It is a classic western where Clint Eastwood plays a great role that really put him on the map at the start of his career.
In this movie Clint Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, a retired American auto worker and a Korean War veteran who is living in a neighborhood that is beginning to change due to all the immigrants that are moving in. He enjoys sitting on his front porch drinking beer, and fixing things around his house to keep him busy. His only real friend is his dog Daisy, and his pride and joy is his beautiful 1972 Gran Torino car that he helped build back when he worked on the assembly line.
The movie is about the relationship that grows as this old and grumpy man starts to befriend his Hmong immigrant neighbors from Asia that he despises. He soon realizes that he has more in common with these neighbors than with his own two sons, who only contact him when they want something.

The action begins when some young Hmong gang members try to steal his car. He prevents the theft and soon the neighbors look at him as a hero, who is taking a stand against the gangs. He reluctantly lets the neighbors young son help his improve the neighborhood, and an unlikely friendship develops that ends up changing both their lives.
Another reason I really liked this movie is that is is certainly not “politically correct” . Clint Eastwood’s character is old and prejudiced, and you certainly can tell due to the names he constantly is calling his Asian neighbors. I actually read a few reviews from critics who didn’t like the movie for this very reason. I think this just makes the character more believable, and it is refreshing to find an actor and director who is not afraid to make a movie the way they think it should be made, without making it more suitable for a wider audience.

Clint Eastwood had said that he believes this will be his last acting role, which really is a shame. I really admire his work, and it is a sad to think we will never see him acting again. He seems like such a down to earth Actor, who you could enjoy a beer with, without him being pretentious. It is refreshing to see this today in Hollywood, where quite a few actors take themselves way too seriously, and exaggerate their worth.
As you can probably already tell both Monica and I enjoyed this movie very much, and we would highly recommend it.
My Gym February 4, 2009

We decided to finally post a video of Kyle at one of his favorite places, My Gym. My Gym is a children’s fitness center that offers structured, age appropriate fitness classes for children ages 6 weeks on up to 13 years. For younger children (3 years and under) My Gym offers classes where the parent participates in the class with their little one. It is especially nice for the parents of toddlers such as myself because it allows us a little break while at the same time offers continuous fun and exploration for the little ones and allows them to release all that pent up energy in a safe atmosphere. It is also a great way for young children to practice social skills with other kids in a relaxed setting. They have various activities for the kids and every day the My Gym staff reorganize everything and bring out new activities so any one class is never the same and every class is new and exciting.
We were advised by Kyle’s specialists and were concerned for a while that Kyle’s epilepsy or seizure medicine would possibly set him back developmentally. We chose to enroll him at My Gym because we thought that maybe somehow this could help him push himself physically if he was encouraged through structured activities. His class has helped him beyond measure and we are daily seeing developmental progress. Needless to say he is not behind whatsoever. Kyle goes to this 45 minute heaven on earth twice per week and can’t seem to get enough of it. He really wears himself out and on the way home he always falls asleep within minutes of leaving. While getting him dressed and ready for class I will ask him “does Kyle want to go to My Gym today?” and a huge smile always sets across his face and sometimes he will point to the front door as if to say “what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”.
We have also been very blessed that My Gym encouraged us to apply for their financial aid program called “Challenged America” specially designed to help offset the tuition cost for children with medical conditions that pose developmental issues. Kyle qualified for the program due to his epilepsy and that is how we have been able to afford to keep going to classes. Check out the video and feel free to leave comments if you wish.
