How concerned are you about a terrorist attack? November 18, 2008

President-Elect Barack Obama has been warned of a “huge threat” from al Qaeda by intelligence leaders in the U.S. and abroad. He told 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft last night that since terrorists could try to attack the U.S. during his White House transition, putting together his national security team is a top priority.

And it should be. The presidential transition period is prime time for terrorists. In 1993, just a little more than a month after President Bill Clinton took office, there was the first attack by al Qaeda on the World Trade Center. In 2001, during President George W. Bush’s first year, we had 9/11.

The director of the CIA, Michael Hayden, said last week that al Qaeda is strengthening its hub in the Pakistani mountains and building ties with militant groups in Europe and Africa.

The president-elect told 60 Minutes that stamping out al Qaeda was also atop his to-do list and capturing or killing Osama bin Laden is a critical aspect of that plan.

Here’s my question to you: How concerned are you about another terrorist attack?

Our family had a wonderful family reunion in Las Vegas this past week.  Since my Dad and Stepmother live in Chicago we don’t get a chance to see them that often.  This trip was especially nice since it was the very first time that my Dad and Gigi got a chance to finally meet Kyle.

As I would have guessed, Kyle was the hit of the family reunion.  Both my Dad and Gigi loved meeting him.  I also was happy to see that my sister and her family also were happy to see Kyle again. My brother in law Kimo seemed to really take a liking to Kyle, and it was nice to see everyone seemed to be fighting at the chance to hold him.

Kyle loved all the attention as well.  I would see him sit up and look around as Monica and I would push his stroller down the Las Vegas strip.  He seemed to be fascinated at the bright neon lights and all the people and activity going on as we strolled down the strip.  He would soak up all this activity, and seemed to love all the excitement.

We also got the chance to see a couple of Las Vegas shows while we were there, and Kyle loved that as well.  We went to see the Price is Right show at Bally’s.   It was a fun show, but unfortunately nobody in our big group of ten got called up to win any of the prizes they were giving away.

The other show we saw was called Comedy Pet Theater.  It was also pretty entertaining.  Kyle was sitting on Monica’s lap and clapping with the rest of the audience whenever they would start.  It was amazing to see both cat and dogs do the different tricks.  Definitely a good show for children who love animals.

As usual the time we were there seemed to fly by, and before you knew it it was time for us to say our goodbyes and head back home.  We were so happy to see my Dad and Gigi again, and wanted to thank them for the opportunity to see them and the whole family.

The President of the United States of America November 5, 2008

This week was quite an interesting and historic time in our country’s history.  As you all know already, we have a newly elected President Barack Obama.  He is the first black President the United States that has ever been elected, and it is a very important milestone in our country’s history.  It makes me feel proud that our country has come so far since the segregation and discrimination we suffered in our country’s past.

This election has been historic, but it also has pointed out to me that we still have quite a way to go. I am so disappointed at the way certain people have a hard time evaluating and making their own opinions based on the facts, and their interpretation of the facts.

My first example of what I mean is our current President, George W. Bush.  I have never seen so many people have so much outright hatred towards a President in my life.  They seem to blame everything that has gone wrong on this one man.  Now he certainly has made some major mistakes in his administration.  We could discuss his mishandling of the war in Iraq, or his massive spending that has put our country in a very bad position.  Add to that the Wall Street mess, the housing bubble bursting and the overall condition of the economy.  All this has happened on his watch, and although not all of it is totally his fault, most people blame all this on him and his administration.  I agree that he has mishandled many things, but people fail to acknowledge things that he actually has done right.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to stick up for him, or his mistakes.  I simply want to point out how some people have a hard time looking at his performance objectively.  This may be simply because they hate him so much, or because they are Democratic, or maybe because they watch a certain television channel, or read a certain newspaper and have been fed this information in a certain way based on the opinions of the media.  It is common knowledge that the media has had a strong dislike of President Bush, and the news stories we hear or read reflect that opinion.

Like I mentioned President Bush has done some good things, and even the people who dislike him, or disagree with him should be able to acknowledge that.  He has kept our country safe from another terrorist attack since 9/11, and the Iraq war surge has proven to be effective in reducing violence and destruction in that country. Whether you agree with the reason why we went to war is irreverent at this point, since we are there now and we need to deal with that, and ensure we can keep our troops safe.  It is in our country’s best interest to make sure we finish the job, and support a democratic government that will help promote peace in the future.  You will not watch or read a news story pointing that fact out to you, because they all despise President Bush, and take ever opportunity to make him look like an idiot.

This brings me to my next point.  Our next newly elected President, Barack Obama.  I will be honest with you and tell you that I did not vote for Mr. Obama.  My reasons were because he is relatively unknown, with little experience, and with a very socialistic view on things that I simply don’t agree with.

Now that the people of the United States have voted him President I need to stand behind him and support him.  I know I disagree with him on many issues, but I have to put that aside and support him because my country is more important than my political party or my opinion.

I truly hope that he is very successful in his term, and can get this economy on track.  He has quite a difficult road ahead of him, and in order to be successful he will need everyone’s support.  I support his because I am an American, and I want my county to succeed.  Despite my disagreements with him, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and an opportunity to be successful.

I have already heard many people who are unwilling to give him such a chance, and this is what makes me sad.  You should not be so blind about things that you cannot keep an open mind and hope for our new President to be successful.  This is what is important.  I just wish more people had that same attitude towards President Bush, or any President for that matter.

That doesn’t mean I cannot discuss or bring up when our President has done something wrong.  It is inevitable that every President will make some mistakes, and hopefully they will learn from them.  I will be the first to compliment Barack Obama when he does something right, and I also can point out when he does something wrong.  But in either case I will respect him as our elected leader, and I hope one day that the rest of the population can treat all of our Presidents with the same respect.

Epilepsy Freedom Walk November 2, 2008

Today Monica, Kyle and I traveled up to Griffith Park in Los Angeles to participate in the Epilepsy Freedom Walk.   As many of you already know Kyle has been diagnosed with Epilepsy, an this was the first time that we were able to do something to help raise money for research and awareness of Epilepsy.

We were a little concerned when we woke up Sunday morning.  It hasn’t rained in months, but as luck would have it we woke up to a steady downpour of rain.  We watched the news to hear that it should be raining off and on all afternoon, and would be clearing up by late afternoon.  We figured we had to go since we already signed up, and Monica had a few friends who also signed up to participate, and we were suppose to meet them there.  They signed up because they wanted to help, and we were determined to go regardless of the weather.

Around half way up to Los Angeles the rain stopped, and by the time we arrived at Griffith Park the sun was starting to show.  It ended up being quite a beautiful day, and we all had a wonderful time.  It was nice to see such a great turnout of people showing up to participate.

Here are some facts about Epilepsy that may surprise you, as well as some photos from the walk.

Epilepsy and seizures are probably more common than you think…
